Turning 65 is an exciting milestone, but it can also bring questions about health coverage. Medicare has several parts, enrollment periods, and coverage options, so it helps to start preparing before your birthday.
This checklist can help you feel more organized as you approach Medicare eligibility.
1. Learn about the parts of Medicare
Medicare has different parts that cover different types of care:
- Part A helps cover inpatient hospital care and certain other services.
- Part B helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, and preventive services.
- Part C, also called Medicare Advantage, is an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits through a private insurance company.
- Part D helps cover prescription drugs.
You may also hear about Medicare Supplement insurance, sometimes called Medigap. These policies can help pay certain costs associated with Original Medicare.
2. Know when you can enroll
For most people turning 65, the Initial Enrollment Period lasts seven months. It begins three months before your birthday month, includes your birthday month, and ends three months after it.
The timing of your enrollment can affect when coverage starts. If you are still working or covered through a spouse’s employer, review your situation before deciding when to enroll. www.medicare.gov
3. Review your current coverage
If you have employer coverage, ask your benefits administrator how it works with Medicare. You should also ask whether your prescription drug coverage is considered creditable, meaning it is expected to pay, on average, at least as much as standard Medicare drug coverage.
Do not assume that COBRA or retiree coverage follows the same rules as coverage through active employment.
4. Make a list of your health care needs
Before comparing options, gather:
- The names of your doctors and specialists
- Your preferred hospitals and pharmacies
- Your prescription medications and dosages
- Any upcoming procedures or ongoing treatments
- Questions about coverage when traveling
5. Compare your coverage options
You can generally receive your benefits through Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan. Each approach works differently, so consider your preferred providers, prescription needs, budget, and other priorities.
