A move can come with a long to-do list, and your Medicare coverage should be on it. Depending on the type of coverage you have and where you move, you may need to update your information or review your plan options.
Original Medicare
Original Medicare is available nationwide. If you move, you can generally continue using doctors and hospitals that accept Medicare.
Make sure your address is updated with Social Security so you receive important Medicare information.
Medicare Advantage and Part D plans
Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans have service areas. If you move outside your plan’s service area, or if new options become available at your new address, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
The timing and available changes depend on your circumstances and when you notify your plan.
Medicare Supplement insurance
If you have a Medicare Supplement policy, it generally continues when you move, as long as you keep paying your premium. However, premiums and available plans can vary by location.
If you are thinking about changing policies after a move, ask about eligibility and any applicable state rules before making changes.
Update your health care information
Before or shortly after moving:
- Tell your plan about your new address.
- Check whether your doctors and hospitals participate in your coverage.
- Locate an in-network pharmacy if you have a plan with a pharmacy network.
- Refill prescriptions and arrange any necessary records transfers.
- Ask whether your move gives you an opportunity to change plans.
