Choosing Medicare coverage is a personal decision. A plan that works well for a friend or family member may not be the best fit for you.

Before making a choice, consider these five questions.

1. Are my doctors and hospitals covered?

Make a list of your preferred doctors, specialists, hospitals, and other providers. Check whether they accept Medicare or participate in the Medicare Advantage plan you are considering.

Provider participation can change, so verify current information before enrolling.

2. How are my prescriptions covered?

Review the medications you take, including dosages. Check whether they are on the plan’s formulary, what your estimated costs may be, and whether your preferred pharmacy is in the network.

3. What could I pay throughout the year?

Look beyond the monthly premium. Consider deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and prescription costs.

If you are comparing Medicare Advantage plans, review the annual out-of-pocket limit for covered Part A and Part B services. If you are considering Original Medicare, explore whether Medicare Supplement coverage is appropriate for your situation.

4. How does the coverage work when I travel?

If you travel often or spend time in another state, ask how your coverage works away from home. Rules for routine care, emergency care, and provider networks can differ.

5. What happens when I need care?

Ask whether you will need referrals, whether prior authorization may be required, and how the plan handles specialists or facilities outside its network.

The goal is to choose coverage you understand and feel comfortable using.
