Dental, vision, and hearing care are important parts of your overall health. But Medicare coverage for these services depends on the type of care you need and how you receive your Medicare benefits.
Dental care
Original Medicare generally does not cover routine dental services such as cleanings, fillings, dentures, or most extractions. However, it may cover certain dental services that are closely connected to covered medical treatment when Medicare’s requirements are met.
Vision care
Original Medicare generally does not cover routine eye exams for eyeglasses or contact lenses. It may cover medically necessary eye care and certain screenings when eligibility requirements are met.
Medicare may also help cover one pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses after cataract surgery that implants an intraocular lens, subject to Medicare’s rules.
Hearing care
Original Medicare generally does not cover hearing aids or exams for fitting hearing aids. It may cover diagnostic hearing and balance exams when medically necessary and ordered or furnished under Medicare’s rules.
What about Medicare Advantage?
Some Medicare Advantage plans offer additional dental, vision, or hearing benefits. These benefits vary by plan and may have provider networks, coverage limits, or other requirements.
Before enrolling, review the details. For example, a dental benefit may cover some services but limit others, and hearing aid coverage may have specific allowances or participating providers.
Other coverage options
Depending on your needs and what is available in your area, you may also be able to purchase separate dental, vision, or hearing coverage.
